DS happened so fast (started and finished so quickly), that many US combat/support troops arrived in the region, only to have to gather up surrendering Iraqis and clean up the area. The whole campaign lasted less than 60 days. The primary element of the campaign was ejecting Iraq from Kuwait; that mission was accomplished. DS has been nicknamed the "100 Hour War" by certain members of the press. Other results of DS were: The combat testing of the US Army's new M1 Abrams MBT (Main Battle Tank); the M1 was introduced in the early '80s, but had never been used in combat until DS. Cruise missiles fired from US warships, smart missiles fired from aircraft, and the new "cold war" designed A10 Thunderbolt II (Warthog) and Apache AH-64 (AH=Attack Helicopter; the AH-64 replaced the Vietnam War COBRA attack helicopter for the US Army) tank killers racked up incredible tank kills during DS. The Bradley IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) and HMMUVs (Humvees) were also combat fielded (tested) for the first time under general combat conditions.
