BB-36 Nevada was damaged & beeched, not sunk; BB-36 Pennsylvania was slightly damaged in dry dock & not sunk; BB-43 Tennessee was damaged & not sunk; BB-46 Maryland was damaged & not sunk.
While it was an initial success, it was a failure. The Japanese failed to sink or damage any of the US Aircraft Carriers. They woke a sleeping dragon that ended up swallowing them.
To destroy the Naval power of the US and all its bordering Islands to be in control under the Japanese Navy. The Japanese may have had more then 1 reason to attack peral harbor but there strategy was to sink as many ships as possible, especially their main targets, aircraft carriers.
The battleship USS Nevada was the only one to get up steam and sail towards the harbor's mouth. However, she was hit too many times and began to sink while under way; the battleship's commander ordered her beached so she would NOT sink and block the harbor's entrance.
At the Battle of Pearl Harbor, the US did not attack or sink any Japanese ships. It wasn't until the Battle of Midway a few months later that the US got revenge by sinking or damaging some of their carriers that were involved in the Pearl Harbor attack.
None. The harbor in Pearl is to swallow for a ship to "sink" that is for the ship to go under water and out of sight. Two battleships were listed as "lost". They were the Oklahoma because she capsized. The other was the Arizona because of the massive explosion ripped the ship almost in two. The other 6 battleships were damaged, some heavily. But were back in service before the end of the war. The Nevada was hitting targets on D-day. Others were hitting targets in the pacific. Hope this helps!
They wanted to sink the 7th fleet in the harbor with a major attempt being the aircraft carriers. None of the carriers were in Pearl Harbor on the 7th. They did sink most of the battleships, all but one was returned to the service, but that took much time.
IJN & USN subs went looking for ships to sink.
Their desire was to sink the carriers which were not in port at the time, the number two targets were the battleships and the third target was the fuel tanks at Pearl Harbor. The battleships were badly damaged but over time all but one returned to service at least for a short time. The third wave was never launched for fear of having their fleet discovered so the fuel reserves were never attacked.
Only the battleship USS Nevada was able to get "under way." She just about made it, but had taken so many hits that she began to sink. Her commander grounded her so she wouldn't block the harbor entrance, when she did sink. As an ironic twist of fate; after the war, two of the battleships that ultimately survived (refloated and/or repaired) the Pearl Harbor attack, the USS Nevada and the USS Pennsylvania were sunk in the Pacific Ocean as targets.
Some of the intelligence gathered in Pearl Harbor was done by 'tourists' taking pictures of the layout of the island. Where our military had its strengths as well as weaknesses. What weapons would be available to target, etc. One of the most fortunate events for the U.S. was simply that the Japanese did NOT have intelligence information stating that our Aircraft Carriers would not be in port. It was also copied from a British attack on the Italian fleet at Taranto. The British used Fairey Swordfish biplanes carrying torpedoes to sink some Italian Battleships. 11 November 1940.
The US was the strongest sea power in the Pacific, and had begun to restrict Japan's access to resources that they needed to continue their conquest of the Western Pacific and East Asia (their empire or "co-prosperity sphere"). Before Japan could attack the US territory of the Philippines, and areas protected by the British, they had to reduce American sea power. They hoped to sink US battleships and aircraft carriers at Pearl Harbor, and then take Midway. For various reasons, this did not succeed, and the attack drew the US directly into war with Japan and Germany, leading to the defeat of both.
It sank on the 7th December 1941
The Japanese sunk many USA battleships, other surface ships, and destroyed a lot of planes. The Japanese really lost at Pearl Harbor. They failed to sink any aircraft carriers, destroy the fuel storage tanks at Hawaii, or the dry docks. What the surprise attack did was to unite the USA will a vengeance and result in the rallying cry: Remember Pearl Harbor. It was only a few months later at the Battle of Midway, that four Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk to lose of one USA aircraft carrier and from then on, it was only a matter of time before Japan was defeated.
becuase they are strong
