Germany's initial tactic was to sweep down along the coast through Belgium and shorten the time it spent in France, eventually taking control of Paris (or so they hoped). The Kaiser was counting on Austria-Hungary to take out enemies in the Balkan theatre. Once Russia left the war in 1917 due to an uprising, the stalemate on the Western front seemed as though it would last, giving the Germans a victory. However, after the sinking of the Lusitania earlier, the US began to question whether it should send troops. Eventually, the United States sent enough reinforcements to play a large role and make up for the troops lost due to Russia's exit, such as at the battle of Cantigny. While the German trenches were infiltrated, not all of them were destroyed. However, the Allied Powers cut off all of the communications and made it impossible for Germany to plan anything, causing battle after battle to go into the Allies favor and eventually the surrender of the Central Powers. So Germany's plan was to sweep down through the weak Belgium and into France, and the long stalemate made German victory look imminent. However, due to a key turning point after the Somme and other major battles, along with the US involvement, the Allied force was too overpowering and well commanded, cutting off German lines and advancing towards victory.
