Australia sent one regiment (about 26 tanks) of Centurions to Vietnam. Thru the process of replacing battle damaged tanks, etc. roughly 50 Centurions served in the war. Australian tank regiments were equal in size to a US Army battalion and their squadrons roughly equalled a US Army company or troop. For example, the Australians called their companies A Squadron, B Squadron, etc., whereas a US unit would say A Company (or A Troop), B Company (or B Troop), etc.

Unlike the US which not only sent "hundreds" of different types of tanks to Vietnam (M41s, M48s, and M551s), the US also sent two separate and different types of military(s) to the war; the US Army & US Marine Corps...in which BOTH of those services were equipped with tanks. Consequently, the US had a lot of tanks in country.

Australia on the other hand only sent one regiment of 26 Centurion medium gun tanks (84mm, which they called a 20 pounder). By the use of attrition, over a period of 3 1/2 years, the Australians ended up deployng 58 Centurions to South Vietnam. 42 were damaged in the war, and 6 were considered not repairable. But as with the US, damaged tanks (even un-repairable ones) were shipped home; there to be either scrapped out or used on the gunnery ranges as a target for other tanks (called a "hard target" in military usage).

Australian and ARVN regiments were equal to a US Army battalion.
