I believe that would be the Civil War, where casualties were not only very heavy, but solely American. The death toll for the American Civil War is somewhere around 600 to 700 thousand men killed. The numbers are NOT exact as the reporting system was quite poor and many who died were not accounted for by the side that they had been fighting for. THe ACW is by quite a large margin, the most deadly war that Americans were ever involved in. As an aside, did you know that about 40,000 men from British North America ( Canada ) volunteered to fight for the Union Army? Why? Money. They could get about $400 to take the place of a rich man's son as a soldier, and if they survived the war, that money would buy them a farm in Canada. That is where the expression " He bought the farm " comes from. it meant that the man had died in a battle, and would not get to see his farm. Jim Bunting. Toronto. Ontario. Canada. Civil War
