Based on the actions of the US and Confederate governments, the US Civil War began shortly after the fall of Fort Sumter in the Charleston harbor in April of 1861. When President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to crush the Southern rebellion, the states of Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina seceded.
