Why did the US want to stay isolated at the beginning of World War 2?

Because the US had already fought WW1 in Europe only 20 years earlier. The US thought that the Europeans had learned how to manage their governments by this time.
The US was also trying to respond economically to the Japanese expansion in China and the South Pacific (which was what eventually brought the country into the war following Pearl Harbor). This concern also added to the reluctance to commit US troops to Europe.

∙ 13y agoYou have to go back to World War 1 to understand how upset Americans were over the warring in Europe back in the early part of the century and in the 1800s.
Europe was controlled by multiple monarchs and the House of Hapsburg. All these monarchs were related in one way or another. They warred against one another for many convoluted reasons. In WW1 a million people died in vain over racial issues and power mongering reasons. The Americans decided they never wanted to fight for or with Europe ever again so they became isolationists.
When World War 2 came along they thought the war in Europe was more of the same old issues. They had no concept of the cruel, atrocious actions of the Nazis. President Roosevelt did try to educate them. Winston Churchill tried to explain the severity of the problem to the US people and Congress.
It was an era of no global phones, no global satellites, and no internet communication. They were dependent on magazines, newspapers and radios for information about other countries. Obviously Hitler was not going to allow Life Magazine do a feature issue about the concentration camps. Therefore the Americans understood little about what was really happening over there.
After the war started they gave up their isolationism but the men who fought in Europe claimed they never really understood how bad the Nazis were until they found the death camps and labor camps.
