Women's rights was not yet established. This was still a time that women may have run the household but may still have been considered property of the husband. Abigail Adams had a very forward thinking lifestyle. She reminded John Adams to remember the women and their rights when he was meeting to help establish the Constitution.

In 1776 women had no rights and were just above slaves in men's eyes. They couldn't attend college, own property, have a bank account, or own a business.

They were signing their lives away. By seceding from Britain they were convicting treason (crossing)against their mother country. This was punishable by death.
