People through out history have been willing to give up rights to kings and rulers. They didn’t know about or think about “rights” because they were told that rulers were chosen by God. It isn’t until the Enlightenment that the idea of “natural rights “ was introduced. In many countries in the 1900’s people still didn’t understand the concept of rights and were fine with an totalitarian Dictatorship. There are countries today that are still governed by dictatorship and the United States may be headed that way.

I believe the Germans, like most all other nations, are a stronger people than what they/we were in previous generations. It's not necessarily physically, but stronger in what we will stand up for because of what was taught to us by our older generation in their willing to risk and give their lives for another human being and their rights.

Of course gays have the right to fight for the right to marry and enjoy all the legal rights that marriage bestows. Rights of every category have been won by people who are willing to fight for them. The right to vote, the right to an equal education, the right to be apprised of your rights, the Bill of Rights: all had hard working people diligently pressing forth to make those rights available to all people. Rights for huge populations are often won through the work of a few dedicated people willing to sacrifice their own time, work and sometimes safety.
