  • The French leaders did not want their people killed en masse as they had been in the Great war.
  • The French military did not have the full means to defeat the Nazis.
  • The French did not had air superiority over the Germans.
  • The French's Maginot line proved to be futile against the modern warfare methods of the Germans. The French failed to focus on new technologies and ways to wage war. They still had the 1914 mindset of warfare.
  • The French had so much internal problems it was difficult to overcome the Germans. They had not had a solid leader for a long time.
  • They thought that by surrendering the Germans would take the land they wanted and some money and then would leave the French alone. They were extremely misguided.
  • They did not understand the Nazis, their value system or their brutal ways. So they surrrendered not understanding how vile and oppressive Nazi occupation would be.
