1. A failed state, most commonly, is characterized by lack of governance, lack of basic facilities to its population, economic instability, widespread violence etc. Foreign Affairs, a prestigious magazine, has been conducting joint studies and releases the list of states defined by failed state index. The result of year 2010 is out. This study was jointly conducted by Foreign Affairs and Fund for Peace, a no profit government organization. This report took into account 12 indicators and examined some 77,000 documents. report is available at link below.

2. India is ranked 87th in the list of 177 states. Somalia-1, Pakistan-10, Sri Lanka-25, China-57.

3. Failed state is a relative term but India is not a failed state by any account.

a. Stable democracy.

b. Booming economy.

c. Improving social developments.

4. At times India is criticized for poverty, poor health care, illiteracy, rich-poor divide etc. But these are the problems of a developing country which gained freedom after a 190 years of foreign rule.
