There are eight communities within the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands. The main communities in the region are Aparawatatja (Fregon, pop.310), Pukatja (Ernabella, pop. 470), Amata (pop.370), Iwantja (Indulkana, pop.320), Mimili (pop. 220) and Pipalyatjara (pop.140).

∙ 15y agoThe Great Victoria Desert ranges from dry gibber plain (stony desert) to undulating sand dunes. It is very dry and arid, but a number of animal species have adapted to the conditions there, particularly reptiles. Vegetation varies from sparse to woody shrubbery such as eucalyptus bush in places. Hummocky grasses grow, providing shelter for tiny desert mammals and reptiles.

- Vegetation includes spinifex (low, clumpy grasses), mulga and eucalyptus such as marble gums
- Indigenous Australians inhabit parts of the Great Victoria Desert: two such groups are the Kogara and Mirning people
