Peter the Great was an interesting man. He travelled around Europe and visited the capitals of Europe. Russia was an enclosed country with no sea access and he decided to grow and become part of the European community and to be able to trade they needed a water route. He wanted Russia to be a great nation so created a navy, reorganized the army to wester standards, sought to have more control over the church, made schools secular, and introduced new administration and territories divisions of the country. He overcame opposition from the medieval aristocracy to the reforms he was doing within the country. He recruited experts to educate his people about technological advancements and he developed a larger commerce and industrial growth. Peter modernized the calendar and established the first Russian newspaper. Territory was also acquired and he secured access to the Black Sea by defeating the Swedish army for the land that became St. Petersburg. In 1712 the city was established and built out of the mud ( look for pictures of the city for your power point. It is a beautiful city with buildings in pastel islands connected by bridges and canals ( yet they don't use the canals like they do in Venice). I have been there and rush hour traffic is the worse I have seen in any country. Peter the Great belt an magnificent palace outside of the city and all of the fountains use gravity to work ( they do still work too). Peter the Great was ahead of his time.
