It really depends on which culture/civilization you want to explore. I will give you one example: the Greeks, having been one of the most advanced civilizations of their time, believed that the sky was held up by the god Atlas. Atlas held the sky above earth, so as not to crash. The earth itself was believed to be held up by a long chain of turtles. Space (AKA the heavens) was believed to be the home of the gods. In old Greek plays, there is a term that describes the gods descending from the heavens in a chariot. This term is "deus ex machina" -- god of the machine. There is also much debate about the heavens and Earth in various articles published by philosophers such as Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato.
The space shuttle orbiter orbits the earth. The solid rocket boosters are jettisoned within the earth's atmosphere, around two minutes after launch and the External Fuel Tank is jettisoned once in space.
At what altitude does the Earth's gravity no longer have an effect on the astronauts or the space shuttle?
Nobody has orbited space but some have orbited the earth and the moon.
Yuri Gagarin was the first human both sent to space and also to orbit the Earth.
They must be launched in to space because there is a better veiw in space than from earth.

by using geology equipment and modern ideas
The first space station created only to orbit the earth was called plain old, 'Space Shuttle.'
How dense is space? What is the chemical makeup of space? Is our Sun new or old? How big is space? How much does space weigh? Where is space? Is space always dark? Is there precipitation in space? Can sound travel in space? Are there UFO's in space, or just here on Earth? Are there colors in space? Is space three dimensional? Does the theory of relativity apply in space? How far away could you see a flashlight in space? Is space new or old? How old is space? What kind of things have come close to the Earth? (see Spaceweather.com asteroid encounters)
He was 41 years old when he first orbited earth.
Space junk is mainly old satellites that we never bothered to bring back to earth. In other words, we launch space junk to space, but it's not junk at launch. Get it?
His ideas where not generally believed because he was an astronomer and meteorologist. Also scientists believed the earth was shrivelled like an old apple.
