The Sinhala people are descendants of "lower caste" Indians traditionally known as Shudras, mostly from Bengal and Orissa regions of Northern India, and have genetic admixtures of Lankan Tamils who descended from lower caste Indian Tamils. Hence, Sinhala are mostly Australoid (which could be observed from their physical traits & skin tone) with little Caucasoid, although they speak an Indo-Aryan language.
According to a genetic admixture study by Dr. Gautam K. Kshatriya performed in 1995, Sinhala Lankans are closely related to Lankan Tamils, followed by Bengalis of India. The study also found that Sinhala, out of all the south Asian groups tested, had the least genetic affinity with western and north-western Indians.
However, sometime later, they created a whole new "Lankan caste system" that is subdivided into two major factions, namely Kandyan and southern castes. Each of these groups are further subdivided into a number of sub-castes.
