Up until the Indian Mutiny of 1856, India was controlled and administered by the East India Company, which proved incompetent in running the nation and completely insensitive and indifferent to the feelings of the natives.

Following the Mutiny, Indian Government passed directly to the British Government, who appointed a Viceroy as Head of a Colonial Administration and made Queen Victoria Empress of India.
