Haiti is a former French colony. French settled in the 1600s, coming from other Carribbean colonies, and in the 1700s 30,000 colons came from mainland France. Around 1790 Saint-Domingue (the name of the colony then) was the richest French colony, owing to the work of numerous slaves brought from Africa. Slavery was abolished during the French Revolution and a black governor, Toussaint Louverture, was named. Bowing to the influence of colonists, Napoleon sent an expeditionary corps to prevent the country's autonomy and restablish slavery; but the country became independent on the first January 1804 against Napoleon's army.

This traces back to European colonialism - the major western Europe countries fought for increased territory throughout the world. England, France, Spain and the Netherlands were some of the biggest players and each established colonies around the world, including in Africa. As France managed to establish a colony in western Africa, there are now several countries in west Africa where French is still the primary language - during the colonial times, native languages were repressed and the native populations were forced to learn French.

Africa is a continent, not a country. It has over 50 countries. Some of its countries and some countries around the world were French colonies or colonies of French-speaking countries like Belgium, and so there are French influences in them and French is still spoken in many of them.
