Before you begin your talk: * An old rule is to make sure you know at least 5 times as much about the topic as you intend to say. This is great for confidence * If it is appropriate to read from a prepared speech, do so. Print it clearly in larger than normal type, widely spaced, since you may have trouble focussing if you are nervous. * In those many cases where a prepared speech is not appropriate, use some prompts, in case you lose your place. Either a stack of small, summarised notes - one for each key point - or Powerpoint. * Practise. In front of a mirror, or to a family member or close friend When you start: * Pretend there is no one there. This is hard, but it works for some. * Look into the middle distance, over the heads of those in front * Remember that the audience will usually be supportive and sympathetic * When using Powerpoint, follow the rules. Brief bullet points are usually best. Don't read verbatim from the display - the audience can do that.

Mark Twain struggled with stage fright throughout his career as a public speaker. While he developed strategies to cope with it, such as relying on humor and improvisation, he often felt anxious before performances. Despite his fears, Twain's wit and charisma on stage endeared him to audiences, and he became known as a captivating storyteller.

I believe stage fright is caused by both. I had a history of family members with major stage fright and subsequently developed it myself. Stage fright can also hit people who aren't used to performing in front of people, and with much practice and exposure to the discomfort, stage fright is likely to be reduced or disappear all together. That's what happened to me. With enough practice, I learned to be totally confident while giving speeches. Just remember, every motivational speaker has had some type of formal training in order to make them completely confident in front of masses of people.
