On the passengers side of the trans about even with the front of the door fan shaped switch held on by two bolts.
I suggest taking it apart and cleaning it before you think about replacing.
The switch is nearly $300
To remove, flatten out the retaining washer side under nut, remove large nut, remove smaller ( 14mm ) bolt on the adjustment side. Connector for the wires is top left of engine at the firewall, black connector with about 8 wires, you will need to snip 3 or so zip ties to get it free.
cleaning is easy, 6 screws in back, pull apart, clean out all that old grease, pay special attention to the two contacts on the sweeper arm, they should move in and out easily as they have springs underneath and are the man contacts, apply new di-electric grease and reassemble.
reassemble and align before tightening, easiest way is to put trans selector in R and move switch until reverse lights come on.
It just has to be adjusted so it will start in park and neutral but not in other gears http://www.cherokee-jeep.com/1-2swremov.htm This site will give you diagrams on how you can remove, clean, adjust and replace the neutral safety switch. Good Luck! -Alohadawg-
You need to adjust your neutral safety/back up light switch, it is located on the passenger side tranny just behind the bell housing. Loosen the 12mm bolt at the top and rotate the switch until the light comes on ( engine off, key on and wheels blocked ), if no luck take it off and clean the inside of the switch and try again. Set so it will start in park too.
This truck is built exactly like GM vehicles in the collumn, It has A self cancel cam inside the collumn just below the steering wheel, Take the steering wheel off and remove the wheel lock mechanism, If you study the design you can figure out how it works,,, most parts stores have the parts you need IN STOCK, But they may not know it, most of the time the part you need to fix this is in the HELP SECTION out on sales floor,,,,,, Good luck, Jamison.
Nothing happens when you turn the key: That about says it all, you turn the key and nothing happens, no crank, no clicking, no nothing. It's totally dead. Possible causes: 1. You left the lights on again: ump start the car and remember to turn your lights off at night. 2. Battery is dead: Test battery and charging system. Replace battery. 3. Dirty or loose battery cables: Clean and tighten cables as required. 4. Problem in the charging system: Test and repair charging system as required. 5. Bad Neutral Safety Switch: Replace Neutral Safety Switch.
There is no factory kill sw installed on a cherokee. Therefore normally if one is installed the wires are cut under the steering wheel and that is where it is spliced in usually it is a large diameter wire with several small wires, usually unplugging the small wires and reconnecting the large wire will cure the problem.
the neutral safty switch is located in the trans range switch if you have an aw4 auto trans replace or clean and reinstall the switch
That is due to a bad or dirty Neutral Safety Switch (NSS). Here's a guide to clean the NSS: http://jeepin.com/features/nss/
Replace the neutral safety switch on the trans, it also triggers the backup lights. You can try to remove, clean and adjust it first, it worked for me. It is located on the passengers side of the auto trans.
There is no such thing as a crank fuse. A starting circuit consists of the battery, ignition switch, neutral safety switch or clutch switch, the solenoid and the starter.First check to see if the cable ends at the battery are clean and most of all tight. Turn the key to start while shifting from park to neutral. If it tries to turn over then the neutral safety switch is bad. If all fails then take it to a repair shop.
The neutral/back up light switch is located on the passenger side of the transmission close to the rear corner of the housing. It is triangular in shape. Take it apart carefully and clean the contacts with contact cleaner.

AnswerIf you have a chip in your key you may just be able to clean your key & wait 3 min. it may be the netrul swith but GM products have an anti teft that if it is not getting the right signal from chip in your key it will act that way. you can usally clean the key and wait 3 min and the car will start with no prob.== Yes, but --- ++It could be the neutral safety switch, it could also be the starter. A problem with the key security system is also a possibility.Start simple. Clean and tighten the battery terminals first. I think this may fix your problem.
Weak battery, bad connection at the battery, clean and tighten the connections. If they have corroded, they may be bad inside of the insulation on the wire. Ground on motor bad. Bad key switch. Bad neutral safety switch, try starting in neutral. Bad starter. You can try engaging it by hand with a screwdriver or piece of wire if you know how to. I would do that first to make sure the starter was good and the battery charged.
I believe the '84's have a 4 speed transmission in them. I think that the neutral switch is on the left side of the transmission, or maybe the other side...doesn't matter. You'll see it when you get underneath the car. Have you checked the shift linkage yet? If the shifter inside the car seem very sloppy to the touch, and is hard to use, you might have bushing problems on the linkage, and that would hinder the trans from going into neutral. Thos bushings are about a dollar each, but putting them in is a real bitch...you need 2 of those. If it is the switch...before you start tearing things apart, get a switch from your local dealer. Disconnect the wires to the switch and remove the switch from the side of the trans. Make sure everything is clean before instering the new switch...bolt it up and you're done...its a fairly simple proceedure
Just an added update.., all fuses seem to be good with clean connectors. Also the signal lights quit too..
