A short scale guitar is one with a shorter neck and fingerboard (and usually a smaller body as well). The shorter the scale length, the shorter the strings from the nut to the bridge. This in turn impacts the guitar's ease of playability as well as its sound. The scale (length) of the neck (and, ultimately, the strings) determines two major aspects of a guitar's personality: the distance between the frets, and the tension (or tightness) of the strings.

In a nutshell, the shorter the scale length, the closer the frets are together. This is a good thing if you have small hands or are a young beginner. Also, many rhythm Guitarists, like Elvis Costello, John Lennon and Kurt Cobain, prefer (or preferred) shorter scales when chording. On the other hand, a longer scale length comes in handy when shredding and playing leads in some styles (like those of Malmsteen, Vaughn and Atkins) because it keeps you from "tripping" over your own fat fingers when getting all acrobatic.

A guitar's feel is also affected by the tension of the strings. A guitar with a shorter scale length (like the Gibson Les Paul) requires less tension to reach concert pitch than a guitar with a longer scale (like the Fender Strat). This is true, as long as both are strung with the same gauge strings. One advantage of less string tension is a "looser" feel, making bending and vibrato more fluid.

So, then, why aren't all Guitars built with a shorter scale? Obviously we'd all benefit from that slinky feel, right? Well, guitars with greater tension benefit from a "tighter" sound due to better clarity in their higher overtones. This is often referred to as "twang." Shorter scale guitars also have trouble accepting heavier gauged strings because the slackened tension causes wider vibration and fret buzz.

What is a guitar rift?

A "guitar riff" is a short section that a guitar musician has produced.

What is a definition of scale of guitar?

The 'scale' of a guitar refers to the average string length between the bridge and the nut of the guitar (this is the average length because intonation at the bridge means that not all the strings are identical in length from nut to bridge).

Does a short scale bass guitar sound differently than a long scaled one..or is it just the size that makes them different?

Yes, the short scale bass sounds different. It has a light, punchy sound, with less "bottom" than the long scaled one. It's a matter of tone. Play a low E on both guitars and you will hear the difference instantly. I use a short-scale bass for playing live because it's light, fast, and fun to play. But for recording, you really want the long-scaled bass.

What is a guitar scale?

It's nothing more than a music scale such as a Major, Minor, and Dominate scale. These are seven note scales that any instrument can play. As for a guitar scale, it's a diagram that outlines the fretboard (neck) of a guitar and shows all the notes to be played for a given scale at certain positions along the guitar neck. It shows the fingering (sometimes with numbers) to help you place the correct fingering as you play each note of the scale. Not all scales are seven notes such as jazz, blues, and pentatonic scales which can have more or less notes. Hope this helped better understand! The simplest way to understand a guitar scale, it is a eight step movement using single notes it can be played anywhere on the guitar.

Is a guitar 18 inches in length with a 25.5' scale standard sized or should you typically go for something larger to avoid looking like a noob?

Sounds similar to the size of my Les Paul except it has a 24.75' scale. By 18 inches I'm going to assume you mean the length of the neck. What you listed is a fairly standard scale. I don't see what would be wrong with having a guitar with those specifications or how it would make you look like a noob having a certain type of guitar. What matters is your ears. Does the guitar sound good? Is the sound coming out the speakers of your amp a great tone. Do you have the talent? The scale of your guitar should only matter if you have a personal preference on scale or neck profile. It has nothing to do with what you can or cannot do with your guitar.
