Because they are very good pianos .... and are much more affordable than many of the good europian companies. (rubbish !)Musicians prefer to use Steinway pianos, because of the range of sounds that they give out ... in conjunction with the touch and tone. Steinway do not compromise on their build, and every design feature is there to enhance and get the absolute most out of the piano.Put yourself in the shoes of the concert pianist, who ... whenever they are on stage want to 'shine' as best as possible, therefore they want the best tool to use. This does come at a cost, and in general they are far more expensive that any other grand piano ... however, that does not factor into major institutions and concert halls purchasing the best piano.
Steinway and Sons pianos have the best everything. If you want to fill an auditorium or concert hall or your living room or whatever, go for a Steinway! There is nothing better. Of course there is always and alternative, Astin-Weight brand pianos are hand made in Salt Lake City, Utah and have a HUGE sound! They have the largest soundboard of any upright or grand and produce a very large full sound. The only problem is, is that they are very hard to find unless you buy one new from there factory, but they are very expensive as they are right up with Steinway in quality.

An "upright grand" piano is simply a big old upright piano. The term was common in the early part of the twentieth century and was intended to infer a sense of higher quality than the rather ordinary term "upright piano" (and was often used by manufacturers of lower quality instruments). "Cabinet grand" was a similar term applied to upright pianos. I think the bass strings of an upright grand are longer than in plain upright.
Packing blankets are packing blankets. Really, you could just use old towels or blankets from your home. the key is just to use plenty of them and make sure that your piano is well protected. then be sure to have your piano tuned as soon as you place it.
