John Lennon and George Harrison were given Epiphone Casino Guitars in 1965; the idea was to promote the instruments, by having popular bands be seen playing them. Lennon later had the finish removed from his; Harrison said this allowed the wood in the guitar to "breathe", and arguably made it a better sounding instrument.
Lennon had played Rickenbackers from his early Beatles days, and likely wanted a change in style and sound, making the Casino his main guitar.
