It sounds like you have the typical Ford radio problem. You're lucky if the behavior isn't completely random.
This guy claims to have the solution for $20.

It requires some soldering, so it's not for the weak at heart. I've yet to try it.
AnswerI had the exact same problem in my 1999 Expedition, The cause was a leak in my windshield. The water dripped down the post and into the fuse box. Check the fuse box to see if water damaged. I had the wind shield replaced along with the fuse box The problem is now corrected.its probably the neutral saftey switch. Had same problem on a 1998 cherokee. Came up code 1899 on my scanner. It only missed in drive not in reverse or park, under load.
Check the linkage between the shifter and the transfer case. If its ok, go in reverse for about half a block and then try to engage it. If that doesn't work, maybe you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
yes unless it is in neutral
If your vehicle is a rear-wheel drive, u-joints on either end of driveline may need replacing.
No, only properly equipped four wheel drives with a Neutral position in the transfer case.
When we have this problem, we turn the ignition off and shift into neutral, restart the engine and it can then be shifted into drive or reverse.
it will drive but when in reverse it wont move
park,reverse,neutral,drive,low2,and low1
Park , Reverse , Neutral , Drive , Low
If a Lincoln LS V8 is making a engine noise when it is shifted into drive or reverse, it could indicate a seized gear in the transmission. It could also indicate a low transmission fluid warning.
There clearly is a problem with your transmission
Park, reverse, neutral, Drive and low
The transmission is messed up, try playing between neutral/reverse and drive, my old Hyundai excel did that and the transmission did a weird sound then went back OK, but not for long. Recommended to change it.
Yes it does count as a gear because there is park, reverse, neutral -the one we are talking about-,and drive. P.R.N.D. GEARS.
Immediately passed the Park position. Neutral separates the Reverse gear and the Drive gears.
I have a expedition a 1997 expedition to be exact and mine has the the not right next to that sometimes are you have to do is you have to stop and then you put it in neutral. Then you turn it to 2 wheel drive And that's
Sounds like the transmission is fine, but your display plate has shifted a bit.. I've noticed it on a few cars I've owned in the past.. You might be able to pull it back into place with a finger, but it shouldn't be a problem if you ignore it..
