All though, elements of theater can be found in all of the original four riverine-based civilizations (Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China), Ancient Greeks are accredited with "inventing" theatre because they have the first documented recordings of it. The Greeks held an annual festival in Athens called the "City of Dionysia" that honored the greek god Dionysus, god of wine and fertility. It was a competition between playwrights, having competitions between tragedies, comedies, and satyr plays. Many Greek plays are still performed today.
it started as a sort of religious practice the greeks started. they would chant, which turned to singing, then people started wtching them so they had to create the infamous greek projection masks so the audience could hear, keeps on progressing throughout many cultures and shabam, theatre.
