The candidate was John Quincy Adams and the deal was called "The corrupt bargain" by the supporters of Andrew Jackson who lost the election. The bargain was perfectly legal and not so unusual for politics. What happened was that there were four candidates that received substantial numbers of electoral votes so nobody had a majority and according to law in such cases, the House of Representatives decided the election. Henry Clay who finished fourth was eliminated from consideration so he persuaded the states that he had carried to vote for Adams. Adams later appointed Clay his Secretary of State and that appeared to be the bargain. Jackson supporters thought that as a Kentuckian, Clay would have had a more natural alliance with Jackson and that he only supported Adams because he saw a chance to be the next Secretary of State which at that time was a stepping-stone to the Presidency.

The election of 1876 when Rutherford Hayes won over Samuel Tilden also had aspects that were highly political and very much subject to question.(see the related question.)

Rutherford B. Hayes was the candidate elected president in a controversial election in 1876 after a corrupt political deal known as the Compromise of 1877. Hayes won the presidency over Samuel Tilden by agreeing to end Reconstruction in the South in exchange for support from key states.
