It entirely depends on which region of the world you are discussing. The Spread of Islam that occurred in West Africa, the East Coast of Africa, Indonesia, and islands of the Indian ocean did primarily occur do to Islam's appeal as a moral and upstanding religion. However, in the Middle East, North Africa, Southeastern Europe, and the Indian Subcontinent, Islam as a religion spread when Islamic States conquered or annexed territories from non-Islamic States. (The Ottoman Empire was one of the most militarily advanced powers in the world in 1500.) This is not to say that this conquest resulted in forcible conversions, but the politics in an Islamic State made conversion more desirable for non-Muslims (economic benefits, lifestyle benefits, nobility, etc.). Additionally, people in these empires had greater access to Imams and other Islamic institutions and some were convinced to convert by Islam's appeal as a moral and upstanding religion.
