the South was settled mostly by Scots-Irish Protestants who are characteristically more individualistic in their religion. This is why the Baptist, Methodist and Pentecostal denominations are in the majority in the South. IN many places in the South the Catholic church was and is seen as an alien kind of faith. Exceptions to this syndrome might be in Texas where the growing Hispanic population makes Catholicism competitive with Baptists in the larger Texas cities.
