'So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open the scroll, or to look at it' (Revelations 5:4).
This scroll was sealed with seven seals and could not be read until these seals have been opened. Only Christ is worthy to open them. John was aware of a future of calamity for mankind unlike anything ever seen before (Matthew 24). These 7 Seals of Revelation are a number of catastrophic events that will impact all humanity. Jesus promised to intervene at the last moment to save humanity from extinction and establish world peace. These 7 seals lead up to the return of Jesus (Revelation 5:9).
The 7th seal opens in the 7 Trumpet Plaques from God on rebellious mankind in the hope that they will see the light of truth and turn away from their evil ways (Revelations 8:1-6). The last 3 trumpets are called the 3 Woes with the first 2 signaling warfare between military powers in what appears to be Europe and Asia. The 3rd and final Woe unites these opposing armies against the King of kings and Lord of lords at the 7th trumpet (Revelation 11:14-15) announcing Jesus' 2nd Coming and the opening of the final 7 Vials upon all who took the number of the Beast - a symbol of righteous judgement preventing mankind from destroying the Earth (Zephaniah 1:17; Revelation 11:18).
John understood that unless these 7 Seals were opened, left unchecked, man's sins would lead to the destruction of humanity. He would see in the 7 Trumpet, Jesus returning to save all mankind, ushering in a radically different, utterly transformed global order resulting in peace, prosperity, happiness and joy for all. No more tears, forever.
John wept in the Book of Revelation because no one was found worthy to open the scroll, which contained God's plan for judgment and redemption. This made John distressed, as he wanted to see God's ultimate plan come to fruition.
