Throughout North Africa and the Middle East (among other places) there has been a huge number of protests against oppressive governments. Most of these protests have been organised over the internet on social networks. This is used because the Internet can be accessed by anyone and can be accessed anywhere and at anytime. This is the main form of communication about protests. Smaller protests can be organised by posters in the local area or simply by somebody talking to people to try and get a petition or a group of people to protest outside an important building.
