There have been short, sprint races since the beginning of the ancient Olympic Games although history has not recorded when the first 100 meter dash race was run. The 100 meter dash has been part of the modern Olympics since the first Games in 1896.

No one on record has broken the 3 minute mile in the last 116 years (since the first modern Olympics). Any records older than that are up for speculation since the mile was not always a standardized race. Here are a few cool stories though:

In 1870 a native American ran behind a horse for a mile. The horse was clocked at 2:40, the native American was not clocked. However, eye witnesses noted his distance behind the horse at the start and at the end of the mile as being very close to the same.

Ladas of Argos in the ancient Greek Olympics. No specific time was recorded, and the distance was 20 stades (about 2.5 miles), but the inscription on his statue says "His speed was demoniac, nor could it even be described."

Asahel from The Bible (2nd Samuel 2) during a battle, chased Abner running fast enough to impale himself on the butt end of a stationary spear which went through his entire body including the armor which he was wearing during the chase. The physics of such an account would suggest that a minimum speed of over 20mph (3 minute mile pace) would have been needed for the blunt pole to travel in one side and out the other side of his body through armor and muscle.

In England during the time of the Roman Empire (2nd century CE) entire tribes of warriors (with similar lifestyles to the native Americans) were noted as being able to catch and overwhelm horse riders while running on foot.

I would be difficult to get any of these, or the dozens of other accounts, to be recognized and accepted by modern scholars. And none of them could be labeled with an exact time or proven to be under a 3 minute mile, but they make for an interesting study.

My freshman 800 time was a 2:26, yet I am a mile and two mile runner. If your main event is the 800, a good time for a freshman would be between 2:05 and 2:15 or better than that. Anything else you would probably not place

Travis Padgett of Clemson University broke the collegiate 100 meter dash record by running a time of 9.89 seconds at the 2008 US Olympic trials.

The advantage is that it is really short and won't take very long. The disadvantage is you will need to get up to speed very quickly in order to win.

well an average time for a 12 year old boy would be around 17 seconds

a good time would be 14-16 seconds

a realy good time wuld be 12-13 seconds

and the 12 year old record is around11.44

so there :)

The 800 meter run is a half mile or, on a standard 400 meter track, two complete laps.

I'm not sure what's an average time but a 51 second 400m is very good for a 16 year old. (Top in Ontario for sure).

The fastest eleven year old 800 metre time is not certain as that track officials don't normally post it on the web but i have experience in 800m and i know that it is in the range of 2:30 to 2:50.

2.50 for an 11yo?

No - 2.20 is very good for an 11yo - and there would be some who have run it in 2.15 or faster.

The NSW record for an 11yo is 2.15 and the Australian national record is 2.11.

The NSW State 11yo title was won recently in 2.20 and the 10 yrs in 2.23. Sort of puts 2.30-2.50 into perspective.

mine is 2:28 but im 13. so if you can get that you will win medal in all of your meets.

Ok, In the 1981 English Championships, Inter Counties, a kid (12) ran 2.05 Erik Kimani, i remember i was running about 2.24 at 12 and was blown away when i saw the 10 top english times, This kid, with a beard, was 7 seconds, or was it 9 seconds faster than the next fastest kid. His 1500 was 4.05 If i remember.

The fastest time in Georgia in the 100 meter is Pedro Holiday and Stan Rowe. they ran 10.39 seconds in the Georgia Region 6-AAA championships on 4-24-2001 and 4-2003. followed by Ahmad Carroll's 10.41 in the Georgia Olympics XIX on 5-6-2000.

For men running under a 60seconds would be good for a 12 year old. Towards the end of High school for an 18 year old a good time would be about 48seconds. And College should range from 44-47 for a good 400m.

A really good time in a seventy meter dash for a 12 year old is 12 seconds or less

That would be 30.13.74 by Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway in 1986. The fastest 10,000 meters by a woman is 29.31.78 by Wang Junxia of China in 1993.

According to TrackandField.com, the American high school record in the 100 meter dash is held by J-Mee Samuels of Mt. Tabor High School in Winston Salem, NC, at a time of 10.08 seconds run on July 24, 2005. Jeff Demps ran the 100 meter dash in 10.01 seconds at the U.S. Olympic team trials on July 6, 2008.

Bailey ran the 100 in 9.84 seconds, breaking the then existing world record of 9.85 seconds held by Leroy Burrell.
