Was it ever legal to dunk a ball from the free throw line in the NBA?

It has and always will be legal to dunk from the free throw line. No one has ever attempted to do so in a non NBA dunk contest, as the odds of doing so with about 7 people in the way is very unlikely. Most people get a head start, as well, and there is little chance of that happening in an NBA game.

What is a clear path foul in the NBA?

It's when a team goes on the fast-break, and a defender BEHIND the offensive player with the ball fouls him before he can get to the basket. The player gets 2 free throws and his team also retains the ball.

This rule is implemented because:

A) The team would've almost certainly had two points had the defender not fouled from behind.

B) Often the foul is out of frustration and commonly leads to injury, so the league wants to discourage it.

Why is a jump shot a tactic in basketball?

Often, jump shooters are accurate free throw shooters and percentages play in the jump shooters favor at the free throw line. For example, a good jump shooter might shoot 46-50% from the field, but at the free throw line this increases to 80% and higher (i.e. ~30% increase in getting 2 or 3 points). One exception would be if the jump shooter has a clear layup or dunk (virtually 100% success). In this case, fouling and preventing the basket is worth it.

The "3-second call" is when a player (offensive or defensive) stands under the goal or in "the paint" for three seconds, which is a technical foul. If you're on offense, the other team gets the ball. If you're on defense the other team gets a free throw for one point.

What is the longest basketball game ever?

The NCAA record book (NCAA.org) lists a 7 OT game from 1981 (so pre-shot clock)... Cinncinnati (75) v. Bradley (73). [Division I]

The longest modern-era NCAA game was on 3/12/09-3/13/09 with 6 OTs. Syracuse vs. Uconn (127-117)

There was also a Division II 7 OT game... (Yankton and Black Hills on February 18, 1956).

NCAA doesn't list any other long OT D-1 games... just that the Cinncinnati/Bradley game is the longest.

I dug around on-line and found that Purdue and Minnesota has a six overtime game in the 1950s. This is another Pre-shot clock game and the source clearly reflects that.

(Page 30 of the Most "Memorable Moments in Purdue Basketball History."

Here's my last update, I found a USA today article on line from 2005 that lists another 5 overtime D-1 game as the fourth longest and does not indicated that it tied for fourth longest.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/games/2005-01-30-flainternational-arklittlerock_x.htm

So the Baylor Texas A&M game may very well be the second 5 OT game in D-1 play.

Here are some records broken during the 5 OT game of Baylor v. Texas A&M on 23 January 2007.

Longest Big 12 Game (Source... ESPN SportsCenter)

Baylor breaks the all-time record with total points scored in OT -- 52 (old record 49 by Middle TN in 2000 (a 4 OT game)

That game is also the record for combined OT points-- 98 (old record 94 from the same game above... TN Tech was the opponent)

It looks like this 5 OT game that had 5 players foul out for one team (+ 2 others with 4 fouls) and 3 players foul out for the other team ties for longest in the shot clock era.

_____________________________________________________________________________

The March 12, 2009 Big East tournament game between Syracuse and Connecticut (both ranked, Division I teams) must be added to this list. This game extended to 6 OT, making it tied as the second-longest game in history and the longest of the shot-clock era.

This game also broke the records for points scored by a team in OT (56 by Syracuse) and for the combined points scored in OT (102 combined).

On Tuesday November 23rd, 2010, in Division III basketball, Skidmore College outlasted Southern Vermont College in a 7 OT game. Final score: Skidmore - 128, Southern Vermont - 123.

Each team had 4 players foul out. A total of 133 points were scored in the 7 overtime periods.
