As a first responder, we always perform CPR if the situation calls for it. We may never know if the CPR we performed was able to save the life or not. Depending on the medical emergency, there may be no chance for recovery. CPR will not always save a life, so if it is not able to it is OK. Personally, when instructing CPR, I ensure that the students are fully aware of the value of CPR and its lifesaving properties. Showing a real life video of a CPR survivor will make your students want to listen and learn the skill more. Starting with a few statistics such as "the chance of survival from a cardiac arrest without CPR is less than 5%" or "only 32% of cardiac arrest patients receive bystander CPR prior to the arrival of Emergency Services" will make your students understand the need to take action should a real life scenario unfold.

What is the compression-ventilation ratio 1 rescuer adult CPR?

Studies have found that compression only is more effective, so 1 compression to zero ventilations is the correct ratio. If the person's heart is beating, then you can worry about respiration. If not, keep the blood circulating and let respiration worry about itself (there will be some gas exchange in the lungs even without it, and if you're compressing a person's chest, you're going to be compressing their lungs somewhat anyway, and even without both of those factors, there's quite a bit of dissolved oxygen in the blood; the really critical thing is to make sure that the brain ... which uses it pretty quickly ... doesn't use up the local supply and start to die off).
