Their worst loss, or losses, came at the hands of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2003. The Red Wings were the defending Stanley Cup champions. The Ducks were the #7 seed. The hockey community expected the Red Wings to easily defeat the Mighty Ducks, and move on to the second round of the playoffs. No one predicted what was about to happen! The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim swept the Red Wings in four games and went on to play against the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup finals. The Red Wings were left to ponder not only the fact that they lost in the first round, but how they could be swept by the #7 seed.

Mike Utley (who was an offensive lineman rather than a defensive one) was actually paralyzed in 1991. The Lion who was paralyzed in the late 1990's was linebacker Reggie Brown, in a freak accident in which his neck was horrifically compressed during a play against the New York Jets in 1997. Thankfully, emergency surgery performed immediately after the injury has since given him back his mobility.

Over the years there have been many rivals. Most notably, the Colorado Avalanche were a strong rival, largely due to a cheap shot made by Claude Lemieux on Kris Draper (of the Wings) following a playoff game which shattered Draper's jaw. From that time forward, the teams played with intensity that approached hatred.
But in spite of any short term rivalries, there are five other teams that will always be strong rivals and those are the other original six teams. Of those five, the two nearest teams are strongest. There is a particular rivalry between Detroit and Toronto, particularly because Toronto is a Canadian city and hockey is a Canadian sport. But due in part to both teams continuing to be in the same conference, the strongest rivalry would have to be with the Chicago Blackhawks, also an original six team.

They were also known as the Winged Wheelers and sported a winged wheel on their sweaters. Norris adopted the winged wheel emblem, the red colours and changed the name of the team to the Red Wings.

The 1984 Detroit Tigers Yearbook with the cover picturing the team logo has a book value of $5.00 - $10.00 in near/mint condition.
Condition is very important on getting anywhere near this price. Common flaws with yearbooks would be staining, foxing (yellowing), fading color, stains, creases, rips, loose pages, cracked binding, and writing on the cover.
