What was the first mammal on earth?

Haramiyavia clemmenseni It was named after geologist, Lars Clemmensen who dated the fossiles to 212 mio (late Triassic). It represents the the earliest known haramiyid, an early offspring of the multituberculates - a sister group to therian (or modern) mammals (one theory), or a group of early mammals unrelated to multituberculates (another theory). The find in Eastern Greenland, 1997 was a sensation because it represented the first haramiyid with fully preserved teeth and jaws and other body parts. These showed that the two other haramiyid genums: Haramiya and Thomasia where in fact one animal in that the teeth from these findings represented respectively the lower and upper teeth of the same animal. It also safely placed the haramiyids under the mammals because it's teeth were very mammal-like. Haramiyavia was small, agile, and it's cranium was 4 cm. It had four specialized point-crushing incisors similar to those in rodents and very complex premolars and molars designed for crushing hard food. It was a herbivore and probably seed eating. The extinction of egg-laying haramiyids and multituberculata was probably among other factors due to the competition of the placental true rodents who first appeared 40 mio years ago. With the fetus raised in the placenta of the rodents it developed much faster and the rodents therefore became more succesfull. Why are giraffes and whales mammals?

Giraffes are classed as mammals. They are not related to retiles in any way.

They are classed as mammals because they are vertebrates (They have a backbone, or spine), they are endothermic (this is sometimes called "warm blooded", and basically means they regulate their own boy temperature by using internal mechanisms, like sweating and panting), they have hair on their bodies, and they produce milk to feed their young, as well as giving birth to live young.

Reptiles on the other hand are completely different. They are Ectotherm (this is what's known as "cold blooded" and means they use external means, such as basking the sun to warm up, or hiding in the shade to cool down), they have scales instead of hair, and they lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young, and do not produce milk for them, as hatchlings do not need it.

Why do fish produce more eggs than mammals?

It's a survival thing. Many eggs are eaten before they have a chance to hatch. Many are eaten shortly after hatching. The chances are that 9 of 10 won't make it the first week, then even if they do, their chances of survival diminish quickly.

What mammal has the longest nerve cell?

The longest nerve cell in most mammals isthe sensory neuron that convey signals from the part of the body furthest from the head to the medulla.

Among mammals that live on land, the giraffe would have the distinction of having the longest at about 15 feet. But remember that whales are mammals, and while little is known about detailed whale anatomy it is likely that the sensory nerve that transmits sensation from the tail fin of the blue whale to the medulla would be tens of meters long, though it might be difficult to verify this by tracing the pathway of something so small for so far.
