Moses

Moses is the most important prophet in Judaism and is also important in Christianity and Islam. Moses led the Israelites out of their slavery in Egypt, miraculously crossing a divided Red Sea. At Mount Sinai he received the Ten Commandments. He led the Israelites through 40 years of desert wandering and finally to the Promised Land. He died there, within sight of his goal, at the age of 120.

Did Moses sin when he killed the Egyptian?

Yes. In fact it is often used as an example of how man tries to fulfill God's plan for him in his own power and fails. Moses had to be humbled in the desert and learn to trust God before he could fulfill the plan to free his people from Egypt.

Edit: Yes, if you kill someone, that is a sin. Even if that person deserved it.

Did Jesus do away with the law of Moses?

More accurately, Jesus FULFILLED the Law of Moses (Matthew 5:17+18), and in so doing, "…canceled the 'charge of our legal indebtedness'(the Law of Moses), which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross." ( Colossians 2:14 NIV). Jesus instituted a NEW covenant, which then made the old one 'obsolete' (Hebrews8:13), thus his death, ended the Mosaic Law. Instead of a 'handwritten covenant' of rules and regulations, like the Mosaic Law, his NEW covenant would put God's laws "…into their mind, and write them in their hearts" and in so doing would make the OLD law 'obsolete' (Hebrews 8:10+13). The coming of the Christ (Hebrews 9:16+17), was foretold through the Mosaic Law (Hebrews 10:1-12) and fulfilled in Jesus(2 Corinthians 5:21)(John 15:12/John 13:34+35/1 John 4:21).

Another Answer:

This is a most confusing question that many Christian leaders have many different thoughts. The main problem seems to be with the timing or advent of the New Testament.

The Law of God is eternal and will one day in the future - Millennial period - be written upon the hearts and minds of all mankind - particularly the rejoined tribes of Israel and Judah into the complete House of Israel as it began. Until then, God's law is still our guide - a mirror for our lives - helping us follow the correct Way. And the only way we humans can follow God's perfect Law, is to have His Holy Spirit within us to guide and assist us. Remember, God desires to save all mankind and not just a few.

However, God has not made His Spirit generally available until after Jesus was crucified and resurrected so that He could serve as our Mediator of the New Covenant. And now, relatively few have been 'begotten' by God's Holy Spirit. These are referred to as the 'firstfruits' of God - the early harvest if you will.

The New Covenant has been initiated and awaits full implementation. The groundwork of God's Law is well established. Our Mediator sits on the Throne of God. The Old Covenant has been modified - Jesus is our perfect sacrifice and High Priest. But the future full harvest is yet to come beginning with Jesus' 2nd Coming and then the Judgement process.

Paul was inspired to tell us that the Law of God is not done away with:

Romans 3:29-31New King James Version (NKJV)

29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

The true followers of Christ - His little flock aka the elect - are today's followers of all of God's Laws. One day, each and everyone of us will be called to chose to become members of the God Family as the Scripture clearly states.

What significance does Moses have?

Moses achieved the highest level of prophecy (Deuteronomy ch.34) and was called upon by God (Exodus ch.3). He brought the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery (Exodus ch.12). He received the Torah from God (Exodus 24:12) and later recorded it in writing (Deuteronomy 31:24). He went up on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights (Deuteronomy ch.9-10) and brought down the Two Stone Tablets with the Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18). He brought the Israelites into the covenant with God (Exodus ch.19 and ch.24), and he oversaw the building of the Tabernacle (Exodus ch.35-40). He was the humblest of men and the greatest of prophets (Numbers ch.12).

What did the Children of Israel always do after the Exodus?

Well, for one thing, we always kept alive the memory of that historic miracle, and

of the transformation of the Children of Israel from a clan into a budding nation,

by observing the commandment to celebrate the festival, and retell and discuss

the story of the event, on its anniversary in the Spring of every year.

Where was Moses when he was given the ten commandments?

The event took place at Mt. Sinai. But if our memory of scripture is accurate, the

entire unified people of Israel, gathered at the base of the mountain, heard the

Ten Commandments spoken in some kind of loud voice from the direction of the

mountain, and found the experience so fearful and exhausting that they begged

not to hear any more first-hand, and for Moses to bring the rest to them and tell

them about it. The so-called "Ten Commandments" came direct, not through Moses.

Also according to scripture, forty years later, as Moses narrated his memoirs to

the people just before his death, and recalled the event at Sinai, he paraphrased

the Ten Commandments, not even repeating the same words that everyone had

heard there.

Why was moses annoyed with the isralites?

Moses was annoyed with the Israelites because they frequently complained challenged his authority and rebelled against God. He felt that they were too easily discouraged and lacked faith in Gods plan. Some of the ways the Israelites tested Moses patience included:

  • Complaining about the food and water God provided
  • Demanding to go back to Egypt
  • Questioning Moses decisions
  • Forgetting Gods miracles
  • Making an idol for worship

Moses was frustrated by their lack of faith and obedience and he even asked God to take his life instead of theirs in Numbers 11:14-15. Despite their shortcomings God continued to be merciful and protect the Israelites as they journeyed to the Promised Land.

Was Moses an African or a European Jew?

Moses was a descendant of Levi (Exodus 2:1-2), one of Jacob's 12 sons whose descendants became the 12 tribes of Israel (one tribe for each son). This means he was not a Jew (descendant of the Tribe of Judah), but an ancient Israelite who considered themselves Semites- direct descendants of Noah's son Shem and also later Abraham. Moses was from a Middle Eastern tribe who resided in the Middle East. You could probably say he was an African Jew because he was born and raised in Egypt, Africa. However, the Middle East (such as Israel and Saudi Arabia) is considered a part of Asia (not Europe or Africa).

How did Moses become leader of Israel?

God gave him the strength to be a good leader. He always told God that he wasn't a good speaker but God told him to do what he had to do anyways. The people saw that he was led by God and I guess God told their hearts that Moses was the one to follow. The important thing is he obeyed God. Listened, loved, and obeyed God. One very important thing he did was free the Israelites from slavary, so that played a vert big part about being a strong leader. He was also a very wise person.

What was the trip of moses out of Egypt called?

The Exodus. The Exodus is something for which we Jews remain eternally grateful to God. It is one of the reasons given for our observance of God's commands.1) It was the fulfillment of one of God's promises to Abraham (see Genesis ch.15).

2) It demonstrated God's involvement in this world and in the workings of history.

Did Moses kill an Egyptian?

The answer to your question is found in the book of Exodus, chapter 2. The murder occured just before Moses left Egypt. At that time, Moses was being reared as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. Not much more is said of the account that I am aware of. If you are looking for information as to the time in terms of world history, it would have been around 1480 BC, since Moses spent 40 years as a shepherd and the Exodus occdurred in aound 1440 BC.
