Muslims are commanded in the Quran to commemorate the month of Ramadaan by fasting.

The Muslims' fast is from the early morning prayer (Fajr)(daybreak) until sunset at the dawn prayer (Mahgrib - prayer). During fasting period, Muslims fast by not eating, not drinking, not engaging in Haraam activities, and not taking part of sexual activities with the wifes. There is special sercumstances.

So too Jesus, who got his first revelation of the Injeel while he was fasting for 40 days. Moses also, got his first scriptures while he was fasting.

Why do Muslims fast during Ramadan?

Answer 1Throughout Ramadan, most Muslims will not drink or eat anything between dawn and sunset. They believe fasting is a way to show that god is more important than one's own body. They follow the Qur'an based on that they will do what is in that holy book. Such as fasting as written above. refer to link below.

Answer 2

If 'fasting' means to reduce the consumption of food and drink, then Muslims don't truly fast during Ramadan. They simply don't eat and drink during the hours of daylight. Immediately after sunset (iftar), they eat enormous amounts of food to compensate, and this continues well into the evening and early morning, as they visit friends and relatives. They also have large breakfasts before dawn, to see them through the day. Many muslims actually put on weight during Ramadan. Any 'self restraint' shown during daylight hours is completely abandoned once the sun has set!

Furthermore, to help Muslims 'get through' the day (which is relatively-short in Muslim countries, as most lie close to the equator), the length of the working day is reduced throughout that month and, in Gulf countries at least, no expatriates are allowed to eat or drink in public to remove any temptation!

Answer 3Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic Lunar Calendar. Muslims are required during this month to:
  • abstain from all food, drink, use of tobacco, and conjugal/sexual relations from dawn till sunset. This the physical component of the fast;
  • refrain from gossiping, lying, slandering and all traits of bad character. This is the spiritual aspects of the fast.
  • encourage Muslims to practice prayer, recitation of the Qur'an, doing Zikr, endurance and self-discipline.

Ramadan is the month of training - training the soul and body- to be able to exercise self-restraint. The fasting Muslim is continuously tied with rules and regulations for an entire month and then released for 11 months to see whether the training has been adequate and effective. During this month the personality of a Muslim develops so that during the rest of the year, the trained Muslim does not commit wrong under unrestricted conditions. Ramadan is a month to purify ourselves. Fasting helps to overcome bad habits either gradually for some of us or immediately for those with a stronger will power.

Qur'an instructs (meaning English translation): "O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you attain taqwa (self-restraint)" (chapter 2, verse 183). Quran also says: "Ramadan is the month in which we sent down the Holy Quran, as a guide to mankind, also clear Signs for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong)."(chapter 2, verse 185)

Fasting in Ramadan means forbidding yourself from eating, drinking, smoking, doing sex from dawn (around 1 1/2 hour before sunrise) until sunset. Out of this period you can do all what you doing in normal days and normal lives (except of course what is not allowed by religion as gambling, drinking Alcohol, prostitution, etc...)

Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan to gain the following benefits:

  • Showing obedience to ALLAH (God) commanded us to fast the whole month of Ramadan.
  • Gaining spiritual self purification and full submission to ALLAH (God).
  • Gaining motivation not to approach what is prohibited to be done by religion. If you are used, during fasting, to forbid yourself from eating food, drinking, doing sex with your partner of marriage (things that are allowed out of fasting) then you will be used to forbid yourself from doing what is prohibited to be done as drinking Alcohol, gambling, prostitution, cheating, etc...
  • Getting closer feeling with the poor suffering and you will be more tending to give donations and charities to those who are in need.
  • Getting closer to relatives through mutual invitations and contacts.

How does a diabetic Muslim use insulin made from dog or pig pancreas and how does he or she fast all day during Ramadan?

When Insulin was first discovered in 1922, it was as you say -- made from pancreatic exudate from dogs and pigs, but this process changed a long time ago. Nowadays, Insulin is synthesized using recombinant DNA. This is known as synthetic insulin -- it's real though -- just not from an animal. If you do run into "natural" insulin, it can be produced from cows as well. All that has to happen is you need to explain this to your doctor when he writes the prescription. As to fasting, while I'm not muslim, my understanding is that the Quran uses the word "fast" to mean taking in nothing nutritious. For instance, you can brush your teeth during Ramadan, and perhaps small amounts of toothpaste will be consumed, but as it's not a nutrient, you're still fasting. Insulin has no nutritional component. It has no calorie load that I am aware of. I do not think that taking medicine you may need to live, and that has no nutritional value is forbidden under Islamic law. Were I more of a scholar, I would perhaps ask how does the Quran speak of treating the injured during Ramadan?

Is it true that if you die in the month of Ramadan you go straight to Heaven?

There is no such thing. The only condition for going to heaven is testifying (saying by tongue and heart) that "laa ilaaha illallahu Muhammadan 'abduhu WA Rasooluhu" or at least "Laa ilaaha illallah" which means that "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) is his servant and messenger" for a person before death.

It doesn't metter where or when one dies, this is the only condition for going to Jannah (heaven). Otherwise there are unbelievers who died in month of Ramadan, are they in the heaven then?

This is what I know. W-Allahu A'lam (God knows the truth).

Subhaanaka laa 'ilma lanaa illaa maa 'allamtanaa. Innaka antal-'aleem-ul-Hakeem.

Sincerely

answ2. The unbelievers would have it that when you die you are dead.

The important thing is to leave the Universe in a slightly better condition than that in which you found it.

Those with less lofty aims may substitute 'Earth' in that sentence.
