Since there may not be many of these locations, many snakes oftentimes den together. Some garter snakes may number in the hundreds - or thousands - in a single hibernaculum, or winter den. Copperheads, black rat snakes and rattlesnakes commonly den together.

The length of time a snake can go without food or water is dependent on the breed of snake, the living conditions, as well as the age of the snake. Younger snakes, who need to be fed more often, will starve quicker than an older adult. And snakes do not usually eat as often during the winter months and some can go for several months without any ill effects. Some even up to a year! The water is the most pressing issue here. Reptiles in general can last a several weeks (2-3) but it depends on the temperature and humidity of the said environment. The best idea here is NOT discover how long they last without food or water rather how long they will LIVE when provided with food and water.

I recommend making a 'snake noose' if you intend to capture it live. But prepare a home for it, if you intend to keep it. A (dry) aquarium will suffice for that. If you merely want to transport it, a simple burlap bag is sufficient. Be kind, rewind...

Because they are storing energy. Imagine a spring. It cannot "spring" very far unless compressed, because when it is compressed the amount of potential energy the spring contains is greatly increased. When you let the spring go, the potential energy converts to kinetic energy and you can't find where the spring went. Same principle for snakes that coil before they strike. The more they coil, the faster and farther they can strike at prey or predator.

It was most likely a Garter Snake. They usually have thin white stripes running lengthwise down their backs. They are non-venomous and harmless unless you grab them, then they can give you a painful bite (on the order of the bite of a cat). The Garters that I have seen in Delaware have ranged from less than a foot to about 3 feet. Garters normally move very quickly and are somewhat aggressive given that they can't really back it up... It could also be a small Black Snake. The Black Snakes that I have seen in DE ranged from 2' to 6'. They are generally solid black with white underbellies. Black Snakes are also non-venomous and harmless. They are constrictors and very docile snakes. I have handled many (to move them off of roads and out of the way of a tractor) and not once has one tried to bite me. They are normally not aggressive at all. One defense tactic that they will use is beating their tail against leaves or brush to imitate a rattle snake. Don't be confused! There are no longer rattlers in DE (not for 100 years). Please don't kill them. They are harmless and there is too much pressure on them already. -BJ

If the colors are arranged in bands around the snake then there are two possibilities: a coral snake or a milk snake.

If red bands touch yellow bands then it is a coral snake. Coral snakes highly venomous and have been known to kill people.

If red bands touch black bands then it is a milk snake, which is not venomous.

Generally, though, you should not take the time to see which it is. If it has these colors, just stay away from it.
