What was the first balloon to ever take part in the 1927 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?
Macy's debuted Felix the Cat, the first air-filled cartoon character balloon at its Thanksgiving day parade in 1927 (helium balloons were introduced in 1928).
Although Felix was the first licensed character, it was not the only balloon in the parade that year. Technically, the first balloon may have been a 21-foot tall caricature of singer/actor Eddie Cantor at the beginning of the lineup. The most popular balloon was a 60-foot inflated dinosaur. Others included a group of cavemen and assorted turkeys, chickens and ducks, all designed by Tony Sarg and manufactured by Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron, OH.

What was the meaning of Thanksgiving?
It is difficult to define a holiday or idea in denotative terms. The roots of Thanksgiving (US) come from religious beliefs and European traditions of giving thanks for a good harvest and upcoming year. When Thanksgiving was first established as a nationwide celebration in the US, President George Washington proclaimed it, '...as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God'. Based on these ideas, Thanksgiving is literally a day of giving thanks.
In 1941, Congress passed a bill, and Franklin D. Roosevelt signed it, that fixed the date of Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November. FDR attempted to move the holiday to the third Thursday in November, but Congress enacted a law to fix the date at the fourth Thursday in November, thus making it an "official" holiday. On November 26, 1941, FDR signed the bill.
