Bob was its assumedn been average height (about 5ft 5 for men of the day) he woudl have been thin as he was very poor and with six children and only 15 shilllings to live on he would have had to make every penny cound. The head of the ghost of Christmas past carried a candle extinguisher. His head bore a flame which he explains is to help Scrooge see into the dark areas of his past. Scrooge initially disowns Fred, cutting him off without a penny, as he mainly blames Fred for the death in childbirth of his much loved sister Fan. Scrooge is more annoyed by Fred's marrying someone who herself has no money to her name. When the Ghost of Christmas Present takes Scrooge to Fan's bedside he sees himself begging for her life. She falls into a coma as Scrooge sits holding her hand. He glares at the baby as it cries and leaves the room. When he'd gone, Fan in a faint voice still speaks to Scrooge, begging him to take care of her son. Scrooge never knew of this and breaks down seeing the events. He knows he has let his sister down. In stave 5 Scrooge goes to Fred's home to beg forgiveness for his folly. Fred is of course delighted to see his old uncle and welcomes him to his home for Christmas Dinner.

Fred is like his mother Fan whom Ebenezer loved. He was warm and family focused and cared very little about how much money he had. Scrooge was the exact opposite. He was cold, miserly and focused on money

The spirit of Scrooge's long dead partner, Marley, came to him in the night and told him he would be visited at midnight, for the next three nights, by three different spirits. The next night, at the twelfth strike of the clock, the Spirit of Christmas Past arrived, and took Scrooge through scenes from his past. The spirit showed Scrooge the woman he had loved and lost because of his love of money. The man she married came home and told her, Belle, that he'd just seen Scrooge, sitting alone in his counting house, while his business partner, Marley, lay dying elsewhere. Scrooge was overcome with fear and anger.

"'Spirit,' said Scrooge in a broken voice, 'remove me from this place.'

'I told you these were shadows of the things that have been,' said the Ghost. 'That they are what they are, do not blame me.'

"'Remove me!' Scrooge exclaimed, 'I cannot bear it!'

"He turned upon the Ghost, and seeing that it looked upon him with a face, in which in some strange way there were fragments of all the faces it had shown him, wrestled with it.

"'Leave me! Take me back. Haunt me no longer!'

"In the struggle, if that can be called a struggle in which the Ghost with no visible resistance on its own part was undisturbed by any effort of its adversary, Scrooge observed that its light was burning high and bright; and dimly connecting that with its influence over him, he seized the extinguisher-cap, and by a sudden action pressed it down upon its head.

"The Spirit dropped beneath it, so that the extinguisher covered its whole form; but though Scrooge pressed it down with all his force, he could not hide the light, which streamed from under it, in an unbroken flood upon the ground.

"He was conscious of being exhausted, and overcome by an irresistible drowsiness; and, further, of being in his own bedroom. He gave the cap a parting squeeze, in which his hand relaxed; and had barely time to reel to bed, before he sank into a heavy sleep."
