Because their will be build up of products on the hair so if you blow dry it then it will smoke and if you try to curl it the conditioner will act as a barrier and you will be wasting your time.

1. Be able to actually grow an afro on your own; which means no chemicals or curlers involved or it wouldn't be natural.
2. If you're using chemicals or tools to straighten out your hair, cease doing this so that your hair can grow out it's natural roots and have back it's natural curl. If you have extensions/weaved in hair, and such, have this also undone so that your afro can grow properly without tangle or damage.
3. If you have any braided or plaited styles, undo them to be able to wash, condition, comb out, manage, your afro when you need to.
4. Continue to wash and condition your hair like regularly making sure it's never left dry as the afro grows in, but that doesn't mean you have to moisturize it every minute or hour or so (that's not always convenient or necessary). Just keep it conditioned so that it's easy to manage and comb whenever you need to.
5. Comb it out in sections when moist/conditioned, and be sure to wrap it or even braid/plait it before going to bed; this helps with keeping breakage and matting at a minimal.
6. Understand that not everyone has the same type curl in their afro so some may be tighter than others.

I would say that Genetics, proper Hair Care, Exercise, Diet and using very little heat contribute to how long a woman's hair grows regardless of her ethnicity. If a Black woman has very short to medium-short hair perhaps about two years with of course proper Hair Care, Exercise, using very little heat and Diet. Yes you can use vaseline on dreads. I would not recommend starting dreads off with vaseline, but if you want to use it to grease your scalp I will use just a little.

If you use too much grease like vaseline, depending on the length and thickness of your dreads, when it's time for a shampoo you will have to use steaming hot water or as hot as you can stand it with shampoo to remove all the grease.

If you are starting dreads off I recommend using beeswax, or beeswax gel,or find a brand that you are comfortable with.

The best comb and brush for afro-textured hair is a wide tooth comb and a paddle brush. Afro hair is very tangle prone and fine tooths just dont work. Try to use leave in conditoner when detangler and general combing; it make the proces much easier. If it a weave that is Afro-texturized it the same procedure only if the hair is human. If its not then follow the directions on the package, ask a hair dresser, or someone who wears wigs often.

You can't get afro hair if you have straight hair. Vice versa, afro hair into straight hair. Black girls with afro hair can straighten their hair, get a weave or wear braids. You could wear a wig but you can't have natural afro hair unless you are half or fully black.

Yes, some salons can do a dreadlock "perm." It is very expensive and has to be redone every 3-4 months. Its not like real dreadlocks... the locks never tighten and mature.

thats not true they will mature, but the new growth and permed parts look very different. many end up cutting off the permed parts.
i have never seen 1 dread perm that wasn't regretted after.
it is the absolute last way i'd ever recomend you try to dread.

At least three or four inches is good to start with, but the longer they are, the better it is. African hair typicaly 3 inchs is enough.
