To keep raitings up and because he is a hotheaded man hore! Plus he is a producer of the show so he can be as mean as he wants its kind of his job. He was also the producer of Teletubbies so i would be kind of a cranky person too if i were him.

The attached USA Today article states that the top 10 idols get to go on the summer tour and they make a 6 figure salary for doing so. For just doing the show, I have not found any reference that gives that information. They may do the competition for free.

During the airing of American Idol all top 12 contestants are paid for a number of things. They are required to join AFTA which has to pay them a minimum of 960.00 everytime they are on stage. They also get paid for airtime on top of all the free stuff they get from sponsors etc. My guess is they are all very well off...

Once there are 24 contestants left (12 boys, 12 girls) America gets to vote!

I don't think they get anything, except for going on the summer tour with the rest of the top 10. They are not automatically granted a recording deal, like the winner. But most are offered a recording deal anyways from Jive records within the next month.

You have to be between 15 and 28. It used to be 16 for the minumum age, but it was lowered after season 9.

Under 18 and you have to have like permission from a parent or guardian.

Lauren Alaina is a 16 year old who has recently tried out for American Idol. Judges, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, and Randy Jackson, were blown away. Lauren was the runner-up on the tenth season of American Idol.
