the ancestral homeland of the Amish is Switzerland. The language that they spoke (and still speak) is a type of German. The Amish began to migrate to Colonial America and settled first among the large German speaking population in the middle colonies. The Amish themselves consider the name "Amish" as referring to their religious views; so to them the question would be like asking "Are Lutherans German?"
Actually they are from southern Germany and northern Switzerland.
Amish women wear dresses because they do not believe it is modest to wear men's clothing.

There are absolutely zero Amish people living in Lancaster, PA, because the city condemns and home which does not conform to the National Electrical Code and other building codes. In fact, Lancaster has one of the largest Puerto Rican populations of any city not in Puerto Rico.

Why don't Amish have mustaches?
Supposedly Amish men shave their mustache because it is considered an "adornment" or embellishment and that would be contrary to their concept of being plain.
They shave their mustaches because in the 18th and 19th centuries, military men wore mustaches, and the "plain folk" are pacifists.
I think you can if you are willing and ready to sacrifice all modern convinces and live the 18th century style of living
You can, you must be willing to live that way. The Amish are very cautious about it. The bishops, deacons, and preachers will normally have someone live that way before baptizing them to avoid them later trying to leave and being shunned.

It may be better to ask where are the Amish notfound.
The number of states where Amish live increases continuously, for the Amish believe that God commands them to have large families.
Most Amish communities are in the Northeastern states of the United States, but they also have spread throughout the grain belt states.
Anywhere Mennonites live, and they live in ever state except Alaska and maybe Hawaii, Amish are soon to follow nearby, since they are related traditions.
Note, I just found out they have communities in Virgina as well now.
Do Amish people speak Swiss' German?
Switzerland does not have a Swiss language. German, French and Italian are spoken there. The Amish speak a dialect of German.
The "Amish Mafia" as depicted on television doesn't exist.
The "mafia" acts pretty much as a government, taxing those who are part of their sphere, and punishing behavior which is found to be unacceptable to their culture.
The Amish and other plain sects pretty much do the same things, so yes, you could argue that there's an Amish Mafia.
The regular Mafia, however, engage in unlawful activities, and considerable violence to persons ad property, and includes many in their sphere of influence who do not wish to be there. The plain sects, on the other hand are generally pretty lawful, and their version of "sleeping with the fishes" is simply to exclude wrongdoers from their spheres of influence.
Because the Amish have strong cultural forces for obeying the law, law enforcement agencies tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the plain.
Guys who grew up in plain families but who chose not to join the church on becoming adults, may elect to take unfair advantage of their "invisibility" to law enforcement as they engage in unlawful activities, and offer culturally unacceptable goods and services to kids in rumspringa. Theb most notorious example of this would be kids from plain families near Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania that partnered with the Pagans motorcycle gang of Philadelphia to market illicit drugs about the year 2000.
Which group of immigrants established an Amish community in PA?
because that's where there ancester settle and came from
Fall and winter Amish will marry during these seasons not because it is a requirement of their faith, but rather as a matter of practicality. Although not every Amish family owns a farm as their livelihood they are still a farming based community. Fall and winter are the most practical seasons in which to marry because the arrangements and the stresses on the new couple to set up their own home do not conflict with the work associated with Spring planting and Summer harvest.
Yes, some do, even growing tobacco.
I have never have seen one do so, but I have been told so, by the Amish themselves.
Remember, each comunity is different and so is Ordnung, some do and some do not.
I live in a huge Amish community, and although I'm not sure I know exactly what you're asking; I can tell you my experiences.
Once an Amish dies, his family( the old-order Amish believe in keeping their family in their homes not nursing homes) keeps him in their house for a viewing, instead of a funeral parlor. Friends and family, both Amish and "English" (as they call us) are invited. It can be kind of creepy if you don't know what to expect. Since old-order Amish do not have electricity, the house is dark, and so in the evenings, they put a lantern or flashlight up to the deceased one's body and/or face. They then have a funeral at the house ( they do not have church buildings but instead meet in each other's houses for Sunday services) and then there is a long procession of buggies going towards the Amish graveyard.
By the way, as a side note, many Amish are very superstitious, and believe when they see white doves flying overhead, someone they are close to has passed away. It's funny how often this really does happen, often when one of my Amish friend's relatives dies, they see a white dove!
Can a non-Amish person go to a Amish church?
Yes, non-Amish can go to Amish church. They will probably ignore you though.
Are the Amish happy with their lifestyle?
"Happiness" is hard to quantify. However, the fact that Amish communities have managed to survive and prosper even in America, and the fact that more than 90% of the members remain within the faith (even when given the chance to leave) certainly indicates that the Amish feel good about their life and their faith. To many outsiders, life in an Amish community might seem very gendered and regimented, and such a life might not be everyone's choice; but for most Amish, they would not change a thing: it is what they believe and how they want to live.
What is Amish culure look like?
18th - 19th Century western culture mixed with fundamentalist Christian beliefs. They are very plain people who are pacifists and closed to people outside the Amish culture.
