Howard Carter found King Tut's tomb because he was looking for it. He wanted to make a great archealogical discovery, and the people who were sponsoring his dig wanted him to find it, so he tried, and so he did.
Carter knew that there was a gap in the chronology of the pharonic rule of ancient Egypt and he wanted to fill the gap.
