It is not possible to answer that question with our current level of knowledge.
Recent amazing satellite imagery has identified large numbers of previously unknown pyramids in Egypt which have been completely buried by sand or are in various stages of decay or construction; since these have not yet been scientifically investigated no dates can be given for their construction.
Based solely on our understanding of known pyramids, the building programme was abandoned by the end of the Middle Kingdom (around 1786 BC). This view may change when studies on the newly-discovered pyramids are completed, but it may take over 100 years to carry out that work, which will be considerably hampered by the large amounts of sand to be cleared.
Why did the ancient Egyptions respect their pharaohs so much?
They believed that the Pharaoh was Osiris on earth. Osiris was the god of the underworld, only after his jealous brother Seth chopped him up and spread him throughout Egypt. This allowed all Egyptians to have a special connection to Osiris. Isis, Osiris' wife/sister bound him up (the first mummy) and put him back together, and that is why he is the god of the underworld, who weighs your heart against a feather, judging your ethics and deeds.
This is where mummification starts too.
The Pharaoh was the living representation of Osiris.
