According to news reports, he had been making good recovery from a routine gallbladder surgery at New York Hospital before dying in his sleep from a sudden post-operative cardiac arrhythmia Prior to his diagnosis and operation, Warhol delayed having his recurring gallbladder problems checked, as he was afraid to enter hospitals and see doctors.

Before Warhol's daring screen prints of Campbell's soup artworks were mostly considered to have to be unique, hand painted pictures of important people or subjects. Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans caused much debate as many did not consider them to be art as Andy Warhol had not taken the original photo of the soup cans. They were also not one-of-a-kind and were therefore not thought of as unique enough to be an artwork. Many people disagreed with the idea that something as simple and insignificant as a soup can could be considered and art work. Most people painted things such as important people such as royalty. The soup cans were also screen printed which was not traditional and Warhol used very commercial techniques.

For an artwork to be called "Pop Art" I think it must tap into the praxis of contemporary culture in such a way as to bring about some form of juxtaposition or feeling of irony. The Imagery used must be at once easily recognizable and esoteric in context.
