The lunar module that carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the surface of the moon and back to the command module was called 'Eagle". The command module that remained in orbit around the moon and eventually carried all three astronauts back to earth was called "Columbia".

The picture I think you are referring to is of Buzz Aldrin. Neil Armstrong took the photo and also most of the ones taken on the Apollo 11 moon landing. He did not directly appear in any still photographs while on the surface.

This is important simply because it is a very important milestone in human development, the first time any human ever set foot on any celestial body besides Earth. Also it was a matter of pride; many developed countries were in a space race at the time and the US had been beaten for first into space, and so won back some credit by being the first onto the moon.

There isn't much gravity in empty space, but there is a great deal of gravity near planets, stars, moons and other celestial bodies. The moon has gravity because it has mass. Everything with mass has gravity (including you, albeit a VERY small amount). That's how the astronauts stayed on the moon, and the reason why their movements were slow because the moon has about 1/6 the amount of gravity as Earth.

At 10:39pm EDT, Sunday July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong first set foot upon the moon. 2 hours 36 minutes and 40 seconds later, he was back inside the lunar module.

Buzz Aldrin descended the ladder about 15 minutes after Armstrong and re-entered the LM about 15 minutes before Armstrong.
