Should an infected spider bite be lanced?

My wife had a spider bite lanced a few days ago. She was bitten on the lower leg while on the job (works at grocery store). The spider probably came in on the produce. Her leg swelled up and she ended up with a good sized lump and bruising right down to her toes (her toes and foot looked blue). She went to see the family doctor who told her based on the pictures that she took and what he observed that he thought that it was an Australian white tail spider. He recommended that she see a surgeon. She saw the surgeon a week and 1/2 later and the bite was lanced. He squeezed the coagulated blood and what not from the spider out, it was right down to her muscle. They packed it and she goes in to see a health care service daily to change the dressing and back to the doctor for a follow-up on Friday. She is off work for a week but on the road to recovery.

No, this is a common myth, but a potato bug sting is not venomous.

=======================================

This question can be confusing because there are at least two critters known as "Child of the Earth". One is a large arachnid that is also called a Windscorpion and the other is a cricket known as a Potato Bug or Jerusalem Cricket. Neither has a stinger, but both can bite. The bites are non-venomous, though bites can become infected.
