It is not harmful to the scorpion, but it can be if you do not know how to do it correctly. First of all, when you get one as a pet, don't just reach in with your hand and scoop it up! It ends badly! You're supposed to grab it by the stinger. (Don't use tongs! It traumatises them from my own experience). If you need to, use gloves until you think you have them tamed. Make sure these gloves do not have a strange texture too different from your hand, or the scorpion may freak out when it touches your bare hand! When first handled and even later on, the scorpion WILL hold its claws open and act a little defensive. Some one told me to not be afraid of the sting, it is only like a yellow jacket and the pain will mostly go away after two minutes. Be afraid of the claws! Try not to let them pinch you! They are MUCH more powerful than you think! Also, if the scorpion wants to crawl around on your hand or enters a true threat stance, it is probably time to put it back. But don't freak out or the scorpion will, too.

Yes, the male Black Widow has venom. But they are very shy, much smaller than the female, and much less aggressive. Their diminutive physique means they have small fangs, small amounts of venom, and they can't deliver the kind of deep bite (and high venom volume) that the female can. Unless you saw a male Black Widow in the web of a female courting it, you'd likely never notice or otherwise encounter one.
