What is the string of a bow and arrow made of?

Modern recurve target/hunting bows are normally either laminated from wood and glassfibre, or, in the case of "Takedown" bows, (Bows with easily detachable limbs), either a wood or alloy handle, and wood/glassfibre laminated limbs. High-performance bows are now often carbon fibre rather than glassfibre. Historically, recurve bows have been made from virtually any locally-available materials, including laminated animal sinew, animal horn, wood, and anything else which will serve the purpose. Making a bow from these materials was a highly skilled craft, if not an art, and beautiful examples still exist to demonstrate the skill of these ancient craftsmen.

What was the manufacture date of browning explorer you recurve bow serial 2d9001?

Your bow should be a 1967 bow if it is an Explorer II. The following dates were used:

The original Explorer had no numerical designation and was 62" long. Usually a solid wood riser...

EXPLORER 62" 1963-67 (Top of line hunting/target 30# to 60#)

Later they came out with a short 56" version and hence the beginning of the I and II descriptions. The first number relates to the year produced...there are some strange ones for transition years in labeling and design and such...but this holds pretty true to form.

EXPLORER I 56" 1967-75 (Short version replaced Explorer)

EXPLORER II 62" 1967-75 (Long version replaced Explorer)

Would love to see pics of it if you still own the bow....

In Britain it is the law that every male between the ages of 10 and 18 years old must meet on a Sunday morning at the village green to perform archery?

There was a law requiring people to practice archery

But 3 H.8.c.3 was repealed by the Statute Law Revision Act (26 & 27 Vict.c.125) [this was a law to tidy up and remove a whole range of obsolete laws].

I presume, but am not certain, that this also repealed sections 1 to 4 and 7 to 10 of 33 H.8.c.9. The whole of the latter was repealed by the Betting and Gaming Act (1960 c.60). So: The law requires all Englishmen to practice archery.

It did so once upon a time. It stopped doing so in 1863.

It definitely stopped doing so in 1960.

When did archery become famous?

Archery is one of the oldest arts still practised. This history will not only take you through a journey on the evolution of archery, but also through the history of mankind. Evidence of ancient archery has been found throughout the world.

Although archery probably dates to the Stone Age (around 20'000 BC), the earliest people known to have used bows and arrows were the ancient Egyptians, who adopted archery at least 5000 years ago for purposes of hunting and warfare.

In China, archery dates back to the Shang dynasty (1766-1027 BC). A war chariot of that time carried a three-man team : driver, lancer and archer. During the ensuing Zhou (Chou) dynasty (1027-256 BC) nobles at court attended sport archery tournaments that were accompanied by music and interspersed with elegant salutations.

Is there an age limit for practicing archery?

You can start from any age, usually, as long as the club has a "junior" section -- and as long as your parents approve, if you are considered a minor.

You don't specify black power or long rifle, or if you mean weight or rack score, but according to the Ohio fish and game website there is a new mussle loader state record as well as cross bow. I will add that site to this answer.

edit: The "Beatty Buck" taken in Archery season in Ohio has surpassed all buck scores taken with bow or gun. Any online search for " Beatty Buck" will turn up hundreds of results for this monster 39 point buck taken by a beginning archer.

Why was the compound bow invented?

There are two parts to the answer of this:

(Part 1). In 1966, Holless Wilber Allen invented "Compound Bow" with triangular wheels / cams. He was then granted a patent right in 1969.

Only Holless Wilber Allen could answer this question from an inventor stand point.

(Part 2). The differences between a Compound Bow and a Traditional Bow, are the existence and the non-existence of the wheels / cams for the two bows, and the relative resultant size of the two designs, with compound bow being much shorter than a traditional bow.

The design of the compound bow introduced 2 new ways to how an arrow is shot, which could be viewed as an advantage or as an improvement in efficiency and effectiveness with weapon design. First, the smaller overall length of the compound bow allows a hunter to move around in the woods with the possibility of the bow catching onto plants and branches greatly reduced. Second, the existence of the wheels / cams requires maximum effort in pulling and minimal effort in holding & aiming stage allows a much longer and steadier hold time when compare with traditional bow shooting of the same draw weight, hence making shooting an much easier task with better accuracy (less shaking of the bow arm). The draw length and tension level of a compound bow feels exactly the opposite as how a traditional bow was pulled.

In other words, the design of the compound bow greatly reduce the human factors and uncertainty in archery. The invention of mechanical release also suggest the same by taking away the possibility of string "plugging" when a compound bow was shot with finger release. There are many debates on whether the design of compound bow is taking away too many human physical elements out of the sport of archery. Compound archery is currently not one of the Olympic Archery shooting style.
