He believed the medium of tragedy is drama, not narrative, and that tragedy shows rather than tells. Tragedy "is rooted in the fundamental order of the universe and creates a cause-and-effect chain that clearly reveals what may happen at any time or place because that is the way the world operates. Tragedy therefore arouses not only pity but also fear, because the audience can envision themselves within this cause-and-effect chain."

Democritus's ideas, such as the concept of atoms, were not widely accepted during his time. His philosophy was overshadowed by that of other ancient Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. It wasn't until much later, during the scientific revolution, that Democritus's atomic theory gained more recognition and acceptance.

In 367, the ambitious and intellectually gifted Aristotle, then age 17, journeyed from his native city of Stagira, in Northern Greece, to Athens and Plato's Academy -- much as a promising young scholar today might travel to Cambridge or Oxford for university studies. Aristotle's decision may have been based on Plato's fame and reputation as the leading philosopher of the times. Aristotle remained connected with Plato's Academy for 20 years, until Plato's death. Shortly thereafter, Aristotle traveled to Macedonia to serve (for seven years) as tutor to the young Alexander the Great.
